Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Staying Healthy In Transit

Recently I had the good fortune of travelling to Australia. It was my first experience with long distance travel for many years, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I did know that people seem to get sick on long trips, whether as a result of being tired and depleted, or exposure to bacteria in airports and on planes-or a combination of both. Finding natural solutions to air travel challenges is not that difficult. I had homeopathic jet-lag pills, which were a godsend since I really didn’t sleep (did I mention it was a 23 hour flight in total, across a couple of time zones?). In addition, I had been taking a tincture of herbs for stress for many weeks. Couldn’t hurt.

Essential oils would be, well, essential, on any trip, but especially those really long distance journeys because they can be used in a variety of ways to combat fatigue, infection and anxiety (did you know Australia requires a Visa to visit? I found out at check in. My bad).

I have a blend called “On The Mat” which I made sure to pack. It is called  On The Mat because I use it to disinfect my yoga mat. But honestly, the power of thyme, manuka and other essential oils is indispensable when it comes to keeping yourself healthy. I also packed a bottle of lavender essential oil. This is first aid in a bottle. Pain relieving, calming, skin-cell regenerating, sleep-inducing...for most people, this is a perfect remedy! For sleep, chamomile, valerian, marjoram or ylang ylang may help. For focus and concentration, and combating jet-lag if you do get it, try rosemary or basil.
