Using ecstatic body postures to enhance your meditation practice

By Paige Cousineau and Diane Perazzo

Are you looking for new ways to advance your meditation, shamanic practice, yoga or body work? If so, you may be interested in learning more about the amazing results that can be obtained using ecstatic body postures based on archetypes that appear in the art and artifacts of world cultures, even those widely separated by time and distance.

The Venus of Laussel or Femme à la Corne (Woman of the Horn) is a prehistoric Mother Goddess carved in stone-age France between 20,000 and 30,000 years ago. Her face is a mystery, turned to gaze on the all-important horn in her right hand, her hair falling over her left shoulder. Unlike many ancient Goddess, the Venus of Laussel is shown with armsone holding the horn in full detail while her left hand rests on her belly — a position familiar to all expectant mothers that expresses abundance and fecundity. Her lush thighs and heavy breasts indicate one who has given birth and suckled children many times.

Medicine people, shamans, priests, and priestesses of indigenous cultures have passed on a sacred body of knowledge about postures for thousands of years. The renowned anthropologist Felicita Goodman discovered that people who assume these postures report strikingly similar meditative experiences. The results from this research are inspiring, proving that certain body gestures and movements allow us to access higher states of consciousness.

We are excited to announce that a small committee of individuals are bringing Belinda Gore, former President and currently the Director of Training at the Cuyamungue Institute in Santa Fe, to Ottawa for a workshop the first weekend in April. Belinda Gore worked under the tutelage of Felicitas Goodman and has been teaching workshops on the principles of ecstatic trance and ritual body postures for over 20 years. During this workshop, Belinda Gore will present a slideshow of postures from around the world to illustrate their presence as a global phenomenon. She will also demonstrate various shamanic postures and guide participants into a trance to experience the art of healing and metamorphosis using ritual postures.
