October Rituals
October is a magical time of year. The days grow shorter, the air becomes crisp, leaves turn brilliant shades of gold and red, and nature seems to invite us to slow down and turn inward. For centuries, people have worked with plants, herbs, aromatic oils, candles, and seasonal foods as part of rituals designed to mark the changing seasons and bring intention into everyday life.
You don't need a complicated ritual to create your own October magic. A few herbs from the kitchen, some essential oils, and a little intention can transform an ordinary autumn evening into something special.
Protection & Grounding
We have noticed that people are yearning for protection and grounding lately. Rosemary has a long history in traditional herbal practices and folklore — associated with remembrance, purification, and protection — while black pepper brings a warm, spicy energy to an autumn ritual.
The Ritual
Place a small bowl of dried rosemary and a few whole black peppercorns near your front door. As you arrange them, take a moment to think about what you want to leave outside your home — stress, negativity, distractions, or simply the busyness of the day.
For an aromatic version, diffuse rosemary and black pepper essential oils in your space for a warm, grounding atmosphere. This is also a lovely blend for students — rosemary supports focus while black pepper brings balance.
Abundance & Gratitude
October is harvest time — a time of abundance of all good things. Bring a warm, inviting scent to your home with this ritual.
The Ritual
Add dried orange peel, a cinnamon stick, and a few whole cloves to a small bowl or simmering pot of water. As the scent fills your space, write down three things you are already grateful for and three things you would like to cultivate in the coming season.
If you prefer, recreate the same ambiance with essential oils in a diffuser — we carry three orange oils to choose from: sweet, blood, or bitter orange.
Letting Go
October naturally lends itself to the idea of release. The trees let go of their leaves without trying to hold onto what has already completed its season — and that makes this a beautiful month for a simple letting-go ritual.
The Ritual
Burn or diffuse a blend of lavender and sage. While the herbs or oils fill the air, write down anything you wish to release — whatever may be holding you back. Feel the feelings of release and the space you have created. When you are done, burn the paper to release the intention.
