Natural Ways to Recharge Before Fall

Have you started to feel like the summer was way too short? Or that you need the whole month of August off? Or you are not ready to get back into the September routines?

Summer burnout can feel like emotional and physical exhaustion, despite holiday time or more moments with family and friends. You might feel out of sync because you're not on your regular schedule. Or you might not do well with heat or humidity. Or you've been neglecting hobbies, meditation or exercise. Whatever the reason, self-care is of utmost importance (as always).

Having a restorative practice can go a long way towards restoring your equilibrium. Uplifting essential oils like bergamot can be used in several ways to replenish your energy. Lavender is another excellent example of an oil that is uplifting and calming at the same time. Frankincense and black spruce can help ground and stabilize our energies.

Essential oils can be safely diffused with dilution. For other applications, the general rule of thumb is 5 drops of essential oil in 15mL carrier oil (think sweet almond or avocado, for example). Once diluted, oils can be added to a soothing bath or a foot or body massage. Adding magnesium to bath water promotes relaxation and soothes tired muscles — it may even help the quality of your sleep!

Incorporating herbal teas into your daily routine can be of great benefit when dealing with burnout. A blend with lemon balm, passionflower or chamomile is relaxing and soothing. Tulsi (holy basil) is an adaptogen, meaning it supports the body in times of stress. It is often described as gently uplifting, helping improve concentration while reducing feelings of mental fatigue. Herbs like rosemary and peppermint can lend a little pep to an overworked body or mind.

If you love crystals, you can add them to a meditative practice by holding them in your hands while practicing breathwork. Calming crystals could include howlite, lepidolite, rose quartz (the stone of self-love), blue lace agate, amethyst or smoky quartz. You can also keep a calming stone on your desk during work or in your pocket — a gentle reminder to remain in the present moment.
