How to Make Your own Lotions, Creams and Salves/Balms
Here is a summary of a few of the things we'll be discussing.
Ointments, salves and balms are basically the same consistency and are made up of oils and wax, preferably beeswax. They form a protective layer over the skin and are absorbed more slowly than creams. They do not contain water, which is what distinguishes them from creams and lotions.
A cream is a thick emulsion of wax, water and oil. It is thicker than a lotion but not as dense as a balm or ointment (note: consistencies vary according to amount of oil or water or emulsifier)
A decoction is like a strong tea. Plant matter is added to water, simmered for a few hours and strained. Decoctions can be used in creams and lotions but we have found that they cut down on shelf life significantly.
Infusions: using herbs to make an oil infusion, either hot or cold, can enhance the finished product. The procedure is too lengthy to discuss here.
