Plant Power! Staying Healthy This Winter
I recently read an article on-line about a combination of plants that can has so many antibacterial properties that it would knock out any infection. The first ingredient is apple cider vinegar (ACV). We love this ingredient at home because it is amazing for skin care. Along with keeping acne-prone skin clear of infection, it also restores the acid mantle to the skin which helps prevent infection. You can also take it internally to boost metabolism and aid digestion.Garlic and onion are also in the mix: immune boosters, highly antibacterial and is great for the heart. Chili peppers! Vitamin C and great antibacterial and analgesic properties. Ginger root is well known for colds and flu because of its anti-viral properties. This little gem is also great as an anti-inflammatory and yet another plant great to help digestive issues and nausea. Horseradish is great for clearing sinus infections, as well as antibiotic properties making it another health superstar. Turmeric also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and also reported to be helpful with inflammatory conditions (ie joints) and heart health. Honey is naturally antibacterial-we use it at home on skin treatments. It is a humectant (meaning it draws moisture to the skin), unlike a drying clay mask. It is also an antioxidant, helping to keep the body healthy. The actual recipe is below in abbreviated form. 3 cups ACV1/4 cup chopped garlic 1/4 cup chopped onion 2 fresh chili peppers 1/4 cup grated ginger 2 teaspoons grated horseradish 2 teaspoons turmeric 3 teaspoons honey Put all ingredients in mason jar, topping up with the ACV (1/3 mix should be ACV). Close well and shake. Keep in a cool and dry place for 2 weeks. Shake well several times a day, then strain the liquid through a plastic strain. For better results put a gauze over it. Squeeze well so the whole juice comes out. Store in fridge. For maximum potency, let infuse 6 weeks. Take one or two tablespoons a few times a day as needed.
