Yoga, The Chakras and....Essential Oils!

According to Eastern Medicine, there are seven major energy centres in the body. These centres can be compared to spinning discs or wheels of energy which are referred to as the Chakras, and each one controls a part of one’s life (physically, emotionally, spiritually). They extend from the crown of the head to the base of the torso and each one is unique. When these discs are aligned, so is our life. But often, our human-ness tends to lead to one or more being out of sync, either too open or too closed. Energy work can help, as can self-work. Using crystals that correspond with the colours of the chakras can be used in meditation or for bathing, as examples. The Muladhara, or root chakra, is responsible for our basic needs. Its colour is red and some of the oils you can use if this chakra is blocked are frankincense, patchouli and myrrh. Next comes the orange Svadhisthana chakra, or sacral chakra, relating to the creative and/or sexual energy of ourselves. Oils to stimulate this chakra include neroli, jasmine and bergamot. The Manipura chakra’s colour is yellow and its location is the solar plexus. Its purpose is to connect us with our personal power. Cedarwood, geranium and black pepper would be a great blend for any imbalances. The heart is governed by the colour green (or pink) and is also known as the Anahata Chakra. Of course, rose oil is an excellent choice for the heart. Ylang ylang and lavender are also wonderful. The throat, or Vishuddha chakra is all about communication (in fact, it is situated at our throat!). It is a blue corresponding to aquamarine, turquoise or blue lace agate. Good oils for this area are chamomile, peppermint or basil. Next we come to the third eye chakra, our centre of intuition. It is an indigo blue colour characterized in stones like lapis and in oils like sandalwood, immortelle or marjoram. The last of the major chakras is our crown, Sahaswara, and represents our connection to the divine and our spirituality. Its colour is clear or purple and some oils associated with this area are spikenard, vetiver or sandalwood.Allow yourself to enjoy each area of your chakra system and its accompanying sounds, colours, scents, crystals and even foods!
