Quan Yin (Guanyin) is the bodhisattva of compassion in East Asian Buddhism, known for listening to the cries of the world. The name is short for Guanshiyin, meaning “Perceiver of the Sounds of the World.” Guanyin is often depicted as androgynous or genderless, symbolizing universal compassion. Her attainment of Buddhahood is celebrated on the 19th day of the sixth lunar month.
