Pure, non-nano, USP grade zinc oxide with a 325 mesh size.
Safe for use in skin care. Provides an all-natural protective coating against mild skin irritations and blocks UV from the sun’s rays. Mildly astringent.
Mesh is a measurement of particle size. 325 mesh = 44 000 nm (nanometers).
Why Non-Nano? The nanoparticle controversy stems from a scientific debate around the potential health risks caused by particles so small (nanoparticles) that they can potentially enter the human body through the skin. Scientific studies show that zinc oxide particles greater than 30nm (nanometers) are safe: when applied to the skin in a lotion or cream based product these particles do not get absorbed into the body, do not enter the bloodstream, and are not a threat to human health. 1
Environmentally speaking… there are studies showing that very small nanoparticles (<35nm) of uncoated zinc oxide can be toxic to marine life, potentially causing cellular damage to coral, juvenile fish, and invertebrates. 1
What is USP? Pharmaceutical Grade. A chemical grade of sufficient purity to meet or exceed requirements of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP); acceptable for food, drug, or medicinal use; may be used for most laboratory purposes. 2
